Preview: Trust Accounting in Version 4.0.9

The MerusCase Version 4.0.9 release is coming up - and we’re excited to showcase what’s ahead! PI, Immigration, and Criminal attorneys, we’ve heard your requests and, as always, are happy to meet you where it matters: in product changes that will truly optimize your MerusCase experience
This post will provide an overview of our latest and greatest change, enhanced Trust Accounting.

If you accept pre-payments or use trust accounts to manage client funds, you can now easily input retainers and refundable deposits while creating a new case:

Fees Charged will still draw only from your Operating Account, but Fees Received as retainers or refundable deposits may be input directly into the Client Account (and then transferred into your Operating Account for reallocation or expenditure within that case).

If you practice PI or work on contingency, there’s extra icing on the cake for you:

When you enter a New Settlement in Version 4.0.9, you’ll notice that the Financials input structure has changed; it now calculates the aggregate value for your listed Damages, as well as your Legal Fee Amount based on your standard percentage.

After you’ve input and saved the settlement details, MerusCase will calculate the differential between your Payment Received and your Gross Amount, and allow you to generate an invoice that matches the Demand Amount - whether you’re invoicing to reconcile your own account, or just registering partial payments.

The trust account created by incoming settlement payments can be billed or invoiced to reflect legal fees, medical expenses, payments to clients, or other redistributions. (PI attorneys, keep in mind that your Settlement Amount will auto-populate with the aggregate of your Damages.) The Client Account Ledger will instantly update to show Credits, Debits, and Balance amounts. If you notice the Settlement Amount listed in the Ledger as “Ignored”, a settlement has been reached but no payment has been made upon its terms.

Thank you for being a valued MerusCase client! We invite you to take this relationship one step further by signing up for an Insider subscription: you’ll get instant notifications as we improve our interface and release new updates, versions, and features - and you won’t receive anything that’s not relevant to your MerusCase experience.
